Sirens comes to an end as each main character makes significant decisions and deeper truths are revealed. The Netflix miniseries follows Dewitt, a harsh fast-food worker who becomes a full-time father, as he travels to a luxury island in search of his sister, Simone. Upon arriving at the Kells mansion, Devon is unsettled by the strange influence Michaela seems to hold over Simone.
Devon concludes in Netflix’s Sirens that Michaela is the head of a cult and the only way to free Simone from her strange attachment is to walk away. However, over Labor Day weekend, Devon is presented with more questions. While Michaela appears to be a monster, Simone loves and worships her. Things take a turn for Simone when it seems like Michaela and her husband Peter are having an affair. Confronted with her childhood trauma, Simone makes a surprising decision at the end of Sirens.
Why Simone took Michaela’s place at the end of Sirens
Returning to her past wasn’t an option, but Simone’s choice was still self-serving
Simone had been completely loyal to Michaela throughout Sirens. When Peter kissed her, she immediately stopped him and kept her boss’s secret to protect her. However, after being fired, Simone faced the reality of returning to her old life. Her father, Bruce, saw this as an opportunity to make up for neglecting Simone when she was younger, but for Simone, this was like a personal hell. In a panic, she tried to flee and ended up running into Peter on the beach.

Devon’s choice to walk away from Simone explained
Devon had to leave Simone to her mistakes
Like Simone, Devon has a tendency to make toxic life decisions. Both sisters experienced the trauma of their mother’s suicide but dealt with it differently. Devon took on the role of caregiver and couldn’t help but sacrifice everything in her own life to care for Simone and their father, Bruce. However, Devon’s trauma meant that her responsible role within the family conflicted with her own toxic choices. She became addicted to seeking out men to seduce and alcohol became a dangerous vice in her life.
Devon could have continued to fight to save Simone from herself, but that would have been just another toxic decision by the older sister.
All of this is deeply connected to Devon’s choice to distance herself from Simone at the end of Sirens. She had upended her life to save her little sister from Michaela, but in the end, Simone was a real problem in her own life. Devon could have continued to fight to save Simone from herself, but that would have been just another toxic decision by the older sister. Simone was no longer a girl who needed saving. Devon had to let her face the consequences of her choices to focus on improving her own situation. It was a painful but necessary decision.
