Marvel Comics Shocks Fans with the Death of Thor
Warning! Great spoilers for The end of the immortal Thor ahead! Marvel Comics has officially killed Thor, establishing a new rule for the nine kingdoms that still remember the Nordic gods. Despite his apparent redemption, Loki murdered Thor for still unknown reasons. This time, Thor’s death is definitive and is not even destined to rest in Valhalla later.
Thor’s Demise Creates a Power Vacuum in Asgard
Thor’s death leaves a void of dangerous power in Asgard. While SF and the Warriors Three are prepared to handle military and civic issues, and Heimdall has been restored to his position as Asgard’s surveillance, Asgard and the other eight kingdoms that still connect with Thor’s native world require a new Thor figure. Without Thor and Odin, Asgard must choose a new king.
Magni Emerges as a Strong Contender to Carry Thor’s Legacy
Future feats of Magni make him more than capable of carrying Thor’s legacy in nine of the ten kingdoms. Magni is not only worthy of managing Mjolnir, but he is the Asgardian god of force, intended to be physically stronger than his father.
Magni’s Vision for Asgard’s Future
Magni comes from the alternative future of Earth-3515, where Thor created a new utopian Asgard on Earth. Raised in a kingdom where Thor had conquered the earth and merged it with Asgard, Magni saw a prosperous kingdom defined by order and abundance. These lessons could make him a wise ruler in Asgard.
Potential Successors to Thor’s Mantle
The nine kingdoms, which now include Hven but not Midgard, would probably welcome a descendant of Thor and Odin ruling. Magni offers continuity of the divine lineage, but also a new beginning not tainted by the errors of Odin and Thor. With Thor Gone and Asgard in need of stability, a warrior in the Magni mold could unify the kingdoms under a family but progressive rule.
Beta Ray Bill’s Role in the New Asgardian Order
The Immortal Thor #25 reveals that Beta Ray Bill has replaced Thor’s memories on Midgard, to the first team of the Avengers. As a founding member of The Avengers, Beta Ray Bill can now serve as Thor’s replacement, at least on Earth. It has not yet been confirmed whether memory cleaning also affected Beta Ray Bill or not.
