WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the Gladiator franchise. Ridley Scott’s Gladiator and Gladiator II feature some of the best battle and fighting scenes captured in film in the last quarter of a century, treating the audience to massive and epic sequences in the midst of a multigenerational saga centered around the revenge quests of Maximus and Lucius.
However, it cannot be denied that the true stars of the franchise are the gladiator fights where men face off against beasts such as rhinos and baboons, as well as formidable warriors in bloody combat for the entertainment of thousands of spectators. For those who have not yet experienced the «Roman empire,» here are the best gladiator fights in Gladiator and Gladiator II.
Gladiators vs. Baboons
One of the most memorable fighting scenes in Gladiator II is the Baboon fight scene, where Lucius (Paul Mescal), Jugurtha (Peter Mensah), and other Numidian prisoners face violent and rampaging monkeys that tear through bone and flesh in brutal combat. After Jugurtha is killed by one of the Baboons, Lucius uses his shackles to brutally stop the jaws of one of the primates before subduing it with chains, impressing the character of Macrinus played by Denzel Washington enough to suggest him as a gladiator.
Chain Duo
One of the first fighting scenes in Gladiator occurs when Maximus (Russel Crowe) is betrayed by Comodus (Joaquin Phoenix), captured by slave merchants, and then purchased by Proximo (Oliver Reed) for use in the games in Zucchabar. Here, Maximus is paired with Juba (Djimon Hounsou), a Numidian hunter, against several armored gladiators wielding swords, nets, and tridents.
The bond between Maximus and Juba makes this battle uncomfortably claustrophobic, as the two are forced to stick close together while facing multiple gladiators simultaneously. The fight culminates in the duo overpowering a gladiator wielding a trident who perishes after Maximus stabs him with his own weapon.
Indoor Duel
One of the most intimate fights in Gladiator II occurs when Lucius faces Senator Thraex’s fighter in the presence of Emperors Geta and Caracalla, with the latter ordering «There is no quarter.» Although Lucius initially hesitates, he eventually overcomes the gladiator, using his fists and a vase to subdue the man.
«There is no quarter» is a military term that designates soldiers not to take prisoners and, instead, execute the captured.
After a minute of fighting, Thraex’s fighter gains the upper hand against Lucius after retrieving his blade. However, Lucius manages to regain the dagger and stabs the gladiator in the chest. In a movie dominated by massive CGI battles, this fight provides a much-needed respite from the chaos while still showcasing the cruelty of Roman leadership.
