The Lilo & Stitch Remake Was Originally Going to Stream on Disney+
The Studio Discovered Theater First Was Better
Disney’s live-action adaptations have been unpredictable since they began in the last decade, and this year has already seen two early releases. In March, the studio released an updated version of Snow White, which received mixed reviews and had a disappointing box office performance compared to its high budget. This month, Disney offers a much more promising entry in its live-action filmography with Lilo and Stitch. Directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp, the film tells the story of a young Hawaiian who befriends a loud alien.
Over Memorial Day weekend, Lilo and Stitch will face off against Tom Cruise’s action movie Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Reports indicate that the Disney movie is expected to outperform the eighth Mission: Impossible installment by a significant margin, attracting family audiences over the long weekend. This will be good news for Disney as it looks to recover its reputation following the negative reception of Snow White and stands out after its original plans.
There was a time when Lilo and Stitch was set to premiere on Disney+. According to the Wall Street Journal, Lilo and Stitch was part of a group of titles slated for direct streaming before Disney+ launched in 2019. However, the studio ultimately decided that a theatrical release was the better option.
