The Cabildo of Córdoba, with a recovered prison that tells the underground story
Imposing and silent witness of Córdoba history, the Historical Council stands firm in front of the Plaza San Martín. In that place the first 70 blocks were laid out, four years after the foundation in 1573, next to the Suquía River.
The Cabildo invites you on a journey through time: its centuries-old walls keep stories of history among their stones. battles, revolutions and everyday life of a city of 450 years of life.
The Cabildo of Córdoba, symbol of colonial power
Built in 1589, the Cabildo was the center of colonial power in Córdoba. From there, the Spanish authorities governed the city and the province, dictating laws, controlling trade and resolving conflicts that arose between neighbors.
After independence, the Cabildo continued to be an important political and administrative center. However, as time went by, their functions changed. In 1989, the building was converted into a cultural space and museum, opening its doors to the public so that they can learn about its rich history and admire its colonial architecture.
A couple of years ago, the Municipality of Córdoba recovered and reopened the cells of the prison that operated in the basement. An emblematic space was enhanced and recovered, part from past and recent history, and urban architectural heritage.
The cell walls are material testimony of political, social and cultural events; They house the memory of women and men who spent part of their lives there.
The Cabildo prison operated in that recovered space: Its construction began in 1609. Over time, the cell and cistern were recovered and put into value for public exhibition in 1992. Parts of the original structure were rescued: concerted masonry walls, remains of original floors, vaulted ceiling level and the old access staircase.
