When fans think of spatial colonization, they often imagine scenes of the Gundam mobile suit with giant space colonies orbiting the Earth, boldly expanding humanity to the cosmos. However, according to Yoshiyuki Tomino, the visionary behind the franchise, those dreams are better left in science fiction. During a 2025 Spacetide panel in Tokyo, Tomino issued a definitive verdict: humans can never live in space.
Tomino’s statements may come as a shock given his legacy, but according to Sankei Shimbun, he clarified that decades of reflection on the subject have led him to the conclusion that space is simply too cruel, dangerous, and implacable for human habitation in the long term.
