Dragon House Season 3: A Game-Changing Moment
WARNING: Includes fire and blood spoilers, the source material of House of the Dragon.
Dragon House Season 3 has the opportunity to alter a crucial moment from George R. R. Martin’s book and rectify an error from Game of Thrones Season 8. The upcoming season is set to feature several battles and pivotal moments established in the final episodes of season 2, including the decisive battle at Red Fork. While this clash between the Lannisters and Riverlords may not dominate the screen time in the beginning of season 3, it remains a significant battle with a character death that will reshape the political landscape of Westeros.
The end of season 2 saw most of the Westeros houses gearing up for war. The Lannister brothers, Jason and Tyland, lead formidable forces ready to join the conflict on the greens’ side. Jason Lannister commands the Lannister army, assembled at Casterly Rock, while Tyland Lannister maneuvers the Triardada Navy across Westeros. However, if Dragon House follows the book timeline, Jason Lannister will be the first to meet his demise.
Jason Lannister’s Fate at the Red Fork
Jason Lannister meets his end in the battle at the Red Fork in Fire and Blood. This pivotal conflict sees the Lannister army attempting to cross a crucial river and penetrate the Riverlands. Foreshadowed multiple times in Dragon House Season 2, this battle is expected to take place early in the upcoming season. As Jason is the sole notable character present, his death is likely to be a brief yet impactful scene with far-reaching consequences. His demise triggers a power struggle at Casterly Rock, paving the way for Lord Dalton Greyjoy to launch an assault on the Westerlands.
In George R. R. Martin’s text, Jason Lannister is fatally injured by a squire named Pate of Longleaf. While this would be a fitting end, there is potential for a more dramatic twist, given the discomfort of assembling Lannister forces with caged lions in season 2. Releasing the lions onto the battlefield, even if they are the House Lannister banner, adds a layer of poetic justice to Jason’s demise.
Putting lions amidst marching soldiers is a Chekhov’s gun that Dragon House Season 3 must fire. Jason Lannister, aware that the lions will not fight for his cause, becomes the prey once they are unleashed. This scenario, particularly after his reprehensible actions in season 1, would be a darkly humorous and fitting end. There is no character more deserving of a poetically humiliating death than Jason Lannister.
Delivering Satisfactory Lannister Deaths
Game of Thrones featured some memorable deaths over its eight seasons, with characters like Tywin and Joffrey representing the Lannister house. While there have been satisfying farewells, House Lannister is often defined by its most despicable members. Cersei embodies the house’s darker aspects, and even though Jaime had a redemption arc, his actions in the early seasons warrant a more impactful demise than being crushed under the Red Keep.
