Warning! This article contains spoilers of season 2 of the Buccaneers, episode 7.
After one of the most shocking episodes of Buccaneers, the program recovers with episode 7. Weeks after Richard’s tragic death, his family and friends prepare to honor him in a commemorative event. Conchita pours all his energy into Minnie, which makes his friends worry that he has not processed his death.
The change of time jump and location comes at the perfect moment
It is a relief that the episode develops in New York
Buccaneers makes one of its most intelligent decisions of the season by skipping ahead six weeks after Richard’s death. The show avoids dwelling on the immediate aftermath and instead focuses on the more interesting aspects of the grieving process for Conchita and the others.
Establishing part of the episode in New York is another intelligent move. It provides a welcome distraction from Richard’s death and visually refreshes the storyline, similar to the scenes in Italy at the beginning of the season.
Divorce scenes are difficult to watch at times but realistic
It’s great to have Leighton Meester and Christina Hendricks back
The New York scenes cover a lot of ground, including the Divorce Judgment of Patti and Nan, confronting Nell about his fatherhood. Fortunately, everything is handled well and there is a lot of time for smaller moments despite the significant plot.
There is an intensity in the court scenes that is unexpected but aligns with Buccaneers’ commitment to realism regarding how women were treated at that time. It’s also wonderful to see Nan assert herself in conversations with her parents.
Conchita’s response to Richard’s death is surprising, but in a way that works well
Buccaneers takes an unexpected route
Instead of being bitter and devastated by Richard’s death, Conchita finds gratitude for having loved him. She focuses on caring for Minnie and others, showing a different side of herself. The program also introduces a bit of lightness and romance with Guy’s trip to New York.
The handling of Richard’s death and its consequences is pleasantly surprising in this episode. The season continues on Wednesdays until August 6 on Apple TV+.
The program also uses New York scenes for a bit of lightness and romance. With Guy doing the trip. The call of the staircase is very fun and, after Nan has spent most of the season taking care of others, it is lovely to see Guy introduce themselves through it in this way.
The PEP talk that gives Horia leads to one of my favorite scenes of the season, where he surprises his mother kissing Mabel in front of her. Together with the cheerful reactions of Lizzy, Jinny and Conchita, it is a welcome moment of romance, similar to what Guy and Nan get in New York.
I still have my reservations about what Richard’s death will do to the long -term program, but I was pleasantly surprised how Buccaneers handled the consequences.
Buccaneers The episodes of season 2 are launched on Wednesdays until August 6 at Apple TV+.
