Jennifer Lawrence: Behind the Mask
Jennifer Lorenzo has acknowledged why critics and the media found her annoying in the early stages of her career. The Hollywood star, best known for his role in the Hunger Games movies, is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood. But early in her career, Lawrence was criticized for what many perceived as a «phony» personality.
A Mask of Defense
This led to many articles being written about the young actress that presented her in a less than positive light. Lawrence has maintained a strong filmography for most of her career, but that hasn’t stopped her from being seen as an inauthentic and annoying actress, and the star has opened up about this perception of her.
In an interview with The New Yorker, Lawrence acknowledged that his younger self seemed upset at times. However, she defends herself by explaining that, although authentic, her personality was also a defense mechanism, and that she was attacked by the press from a very young age, concluding that she felt rejected because of her personality.
«Oh, no. So hyperactive. So embarrassing. Well, it is, or was, my genuine personality, but it was also a defense mechanism. And so it was a defense mechanism, just saying, ‘I’m not like that! I poop my pants every day!'»
She reveals that she anticipated the change in public opinion and that she felt attacked by the paparazzi.
“I was young, I lived alone, they persecuted me.”
She went on to admit that she was doing too many projects and too much press, and that she understands why she seemed upset. Lawrence even confesses that Ariana Grande’s SNL parody of her was accurate.
«I look at those interviews and that person is annoying. I understand why it would be annoying to see that person everywhere. Ariana Grande’s impression of me on ‘SNL’ was spot on.»
Lawrence concluded by stating that she felt rejected not because of her films, but because of who she was as a person.
“I felt—I didn’t feel, I wasI think, rejected not for my films, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality.”
Evolution of a Star
It’s worth noting that Lawrence tasted success at a young age, earning an Oscar nomination at the age of 19 for her breakthrough role in Debra Granik’s independent masterpiece, Winter Bone. Two years later she rose to worldwide fame as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games film franchise and won an Oscar for her role in Bright Side Playbook.
Lawrence’s work has earned him four Oscar nominations and one win.
The Real Jennifer
This all happened early in Lawrence’s career, so it’s easy to understand why he felt out of place, and it’s likely that from his comments he was struggling with some degree of imposter syndrome. Fighting the pitfalls of fame and fortune, trying to be professional, work hard and seem likeable would take its toll on anyone.
Her unpredictable personality often made her the subject of media scrutiny, but it also sheds light on the way outspoken actresses tend to receive more negativity than their male counterparts. Katherine Heigl’s professional decline after comments he made about her Grey’s Anatomy character is an early example of an actress portrayed as «difficult» for speaking her mind.
This is definitely something Lawrence feels applies to her, and not without good reason. It is fair to say that not all people who appear before the public have a personality that makes them likable, and in Lorenzo In this case, it’s likely that her personality was a little over the top to mask her insecurities, but it’s good to know that she’s much more comfortable with who she is now.
