Marvel Cancels ‘Captains United’ and Replaces Them with SHIELD
The Return of SHIELD Means No French, British, Chinese, or Russian Captain America
Fans of Captain America are dealing with the news that Marvel’s SHIELD is returning, but the group’s replacement united captains seems to have gone unnoticed. Without official recognition, the headline-grabbing Captain America-style international heroes created to support Steve Rogers have apparently been scrapped.
While it’s true that comics publishers don’t usually «announce» or even confirm that plans have been altered or abandoned entirely, United Captains is a different case. After all, the reveal that a costumed Captain France, Captain Kingdom, Red Widow, and The Star would recruit a mascot super soldier from France, the United Kingdom, Russia, and China, respectively, made major headlines.
It’s hype that can never be matched by word that Nick Fury’s SHIELD is back in the comics, but it’s Marvel’s decision to almost completely ignore the existence of Captains United that is now raising eyebrows. Especially with the international task force agents replaced (or retired) on the updated cover for Captain America #6, the team’s previously planned debut.
It’s hard to pull off such a blatant change of plan in the best of scenarios, let alone one that literally deals with international politics (with these heroes specifically representing the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council). With the official design sketches for the Captains revealed in a Marvel press release together with the staff of the artist Valerio Schiti Instagram, both have now been removed.
Current Captain America Writer Chip Zdarsky comes the closest to officially addressing the story and the scrapped heroes in the official press release, before the opportunity arose to relaunch a new form of SHIELD:
«When we first announced plans for the second arc of this Cap run, I had a different idea in mind for the team supporting Steve. But when the possibility of a new SHIELD arose, we got to work.»
All the evidence confirms it: Marvel officially announces the United Captains concept planned for Captain America #6 this January. And needless to say, fans will have questions.
Captain America #6 arrives on January 21, 2026 from Marvel Comics.
