The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 will surely introduce Hiccup’s mother, Valka, based on the animated film. Casting decisions for the character have not been finalized yet, but her addition is imminent as the sequel will feature greater references to her.
The sequel will also bring back familiar faces such as Mason Thames, Nico Parker as Astrid, and Gerard Butler as Stoick, along with other residents of Berk. While the franchise has a history of bringing back animated voice actors when possible, Valka’s casting decision presents a unique challenge as it remains to be seen if the film will retain the original voice actor or opt for a new interpretation of the character. With the film set for release in 2027, finding the right actress to portray Valka is crucial for the success of the sequel.
Hiccup’s mother plays a pivotal role in the sequel as a strong, loving, and skilled dragon pilot, mother, and wife. The film requires an actress who can effectively embody all these aspects while resembling the animated character. Fortunately, there are several strong candidates for the role, including Kelly Macdonald.
Known for her roles in No Country for Old Men and Boardwalk Empire, Kelly Macdonald may not be as widely recognized as some other actresses, but the Scottish actress would bring authenticity to the role of Valka. With a diverse perspective on Berk in live-action, her portrayal would add a unique layer of representation to the film.
Throughout her career, Macdonald has proven her ability to portray complex characters, making her a strong contender for the role of Valka in How to Train Your Dragon 2.
How to train your dragon».
Robin Wright
One of the many characteristics that is important for Valka is her wisdom and ability to take on a leadership position, especially as the story expands further in How to Train Your Dragon 2. Robin Wright could be an excellent choice to portray this character in a live-action adaptation.
The award-winning actress has experience playing strong leaders in House of Cards, and although Valka has a softer side compared to Claire Underwood, Wright could easily embody both roles.
At 59 years old, Nicole Kidman is the oldest actress on the list, but she still has the ability to credibly portray Hiccup’s mother and Stoick’s wife.
Throughout her career, Kidman has received five Oscar nominations (winning once) and has appeared in major box office hits such as «Aquaman.» With her global recognition, she would be a strong choice for the role of Valka in «How to Train Your Dragon 2.»
Known for her ability to tackle complex and challenging characters, Kidman is incredibly versatile and capable of evolving her performance throughout the film. She has the skills necessary to convincingly portray Hiccup’s mother and would be a valuable addition to the cast.
