Netflix is removing interactive content
**Netflix** is eliminating the interactive **Black Mirror** movie **Bandersnatch** from its catalog, but the reasons for the transmission service’s decision are not entirely clear. **Black Mirror** has long been one of the best programs on Netflix and has become a flagship series for the streaming service. The Anthology Horror series is so popular that it spawned an interactive film in 2018: **Bandersnatch**. As an interactive movie, **Bandersnatch** had multiple endings, numerous options for viewers to choose from, and a gripping story that blurred the lines between watching and controlling. However, as fascinating and innovative as it was, **Bandersnatch** will soon be gone.
Netflix is eliminating the interactive content in favor of fully interactive video games
A recent report from AV Club revealed that **Netflix** plans to remove both **Bandersnatch** and **Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend** on May 12. This move is part of **Netflix’s** gradual elimination of interactive content. The streaming service stopped producing new interactive titles in 2023 and removed most of its interactive content by the end of 2024. **Netflix** spokesperson Chrissy Kelleher mentioned that the technology used for interactive content was limiting the streamer’s «**technological efforts in other areas**,» which are now focused on video games.
Since 2021, **Netflix** has added over 120 mobile video games to its platform. The streaming service’s catalog has grown so large that a redesign is expected to support their video game efforts. Speculations suggest that the redesign may render **Netflix’s** interactive films incompatible with the site, leading to their removal. **Netflix** has likely determined that fully interactive games, like those based on **Too Hot to Drive** and **Love is Blind**, are more valuable in retaining users on the platform than interactive titles.
Bandersnatch leaving Netflix is more confusing after Black Mirror season 7’s «Plaything» episode
Now that **Netflix** is removing **Bandersnatch** from its catalog, there is an episode in **Black Mirror** Season 7 that serves as a sequel to a film that will no longer exist. This decision not only turns an episode of **Black Mirror** into an orphaned sequel but also erases a significant piece of modern media. **Bandersnatch** won two separate Emmy awards in 2019, including one for outstanding television film, making its removal all the more impactful. Even if it wasn’t a crucial part of **Black Mirror** Season 7, **Bandersnatch** deserved to stay for its contribution to Netflix’s interactive film experiment.
