Lilo and Stitch has had a successful box office debut, but it remains to be seen if it will have enough momentum to reach a billion dollars in earnings. This new film is Disney’s latest live-action adaptation of one of its classic animated properties. While it may soon be overshadowed by the upcoming 2026 remake of Moana, it is currently the most recent remake, based on the 2002 animated film of the same name. The story follows orphan Lilo (Maia Kealoha) who befriends a genetically engineered alien experiment named Stitch (Chris Sanders).
Lilo and Stitch had an impressive opening weekend at the box office, bringing in $146 million over three days. The star-studded cast, including Sydney Elizabeth Agudong, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Courtney B. Vance, and Hannah Waddingham, helped the film break the record for the biggest Memorial Day weekend debut in U.S. box office history, surpassing the previous record set by 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, which opened with $126.7 million and went on to earn $1.496 billion worldwide.
