With the aim of continuing to raise awareness about the importance of reusing the biodegradable waste that is generated daily and, in turn, promoting institutional and citizen commitment in this regard, the IDSR (Institute for Sustainable Development of Rafaela) delivered community compost bins to local institutions.
Precisely, within the framework of the “Composting Month” and in line with the development of the “Sustainable Institutions” program, the IDSR delivered devices and information material to the Aero Club of Rafaela, the Commercial and Industrial Center of Rafaela and the Region and the Garden Municipal no. 3, Monsignor Zazpe headquarters.
The aforementioned actions are added to others promoted by the municipal government, which tend to promote the commitment of institutions with the care of the environment and the correct disposal of waste.
Regarding the devices, it is important to mention that they allow those who are part of each entity to become familiar with the practice and dispose of the organic waste they generate daily.
In addition, they make it possible to generate awareness and information since, based on the sample units, the community can visualize the compost process and replicate it in their homes, thus multiplying adherence to the practice.
In this regard, Enrique Soffietti, director of the IDSR, highlighted that «although we will work on the topic of composting throughout the year, we wanted to take advantage of this month to reinforce awareness about this practice that allows us to value the waste we generate at home and which directly impacts the comprehensive local waste management because – he indicated – the amount of biodegradable waste that reaches the cell is reduced by 50%. This makes it possible to prolong its useful life. Composting is nature’s recycling system.”
Soffietti mentioned that «the devices that we raffle and those that we deliver to the institutions fulfill the function of facilitating the process for those who are just starting out and make it visible to those who do not know it or do not dare to start.»
Composting
Composting is a natural transformation process of organic waste; a biological procedure that converts them into nutrient-rich fertilizer and serves to fertilize the land.
In Rafaela, most of the waste generated daily in homes contains 50% organic matter that can be reused to return to the earth and thus favor crops and plants in general.
In addition, it has immediate results in the comprehensive waste management of our city. If the biodegradable waste generated in homes is composted, the amount that reaches the landfill cell is reduced, lengthening its useful life. This is why practice becomes so important.
Other experiences
Also, within the framework of the “Sustainable Institutions” program that promotes good environmental practices in organizations, compost bins were delivered to the Pingüino Supermarket, branch no. 8 and to the 9 de Julio Club.
Both the company and the sports entity are carrying out the practice of community composting, allowing neighbors and members of each to bring their organic waste.
It is worth remembering that, weeks ago, the IDSR technical team made a visit to verify the devices and control the process that is being carried out. Everything is progressing with very positive results.
